Favorite Holiday Song (#musicandmath)

First Grade Favorite Holiday Song graphing music lesson.
We sang popular Christmas songs and the students made Holiday Song Books. The songbooks contained 11 songs. (NEXT YEAR I WILL MAKE A BOOK WITH 6 SONGS.) During the next lesson students marked their favorite song with a sticker.

As a class we looked at the results, tallied and discussed them.  The students then transferred the results to their own paper and wrote their interpretations compared to their own favorite.

On the worksheet, I added a box to draw themselves sharing music with someone.
The students loved this!

Hallway wall for everyone!!

I am soooooo excited about the music staff in my hallway at school.  The caption is "Each of us a single note, together we create a masterpiece at DSE!"  Each note has a student's name and each color is a different class.  I am thinking I will leave it up the whole year as a teaching tool, but we will see how that goes.

Anchor charts

So... I'm not sure if anchor charts are for the students or serve as a visual reminder for me.  I love the active listening one I made and can refer to to correct or redirect students, it hangs near where I stand in the room.  The other chart reminds me what to have the kids look for when examining a new piece of music.
Jericho Jenga!!      One of our favorite games in music class is Jericho Jenga.  Students sit in a circle with a jenga stack in the middle.  One student walks the circle (to the beat) as everyone sings the first half of Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho.  At "the walls came a tumblin' down" the students tops in front of someone in the circle ad that person goes to pull out a jenga block while the class sings the second half!  Repeat (over and over).  For big classes use two Jenga stacks and two people walking.
